Re: Finally the Real Key !!!!

I would respectfully say that we can know.

My argument is based on the tautological statement, "objects are objects."

The clock, for instance, is made up of a glass face, the mechanism, the case, the brass, the hands, etc. Each of the component parts do not have an individual power; the object only has its power outside the Room as an indivisible and immutable whole. We know that the hands, for instance, don't work on their own because they cannot be separated from the clock. This suggests that things have powers only if they are created objects, composites of several elements working in harmony to become something whose sum is greater than its parts.

But this goes deeper. If an object must be a created thing that is greater than its parts, the water and air in the room cannot be objects, since they are merely chemical compositions: they are what they are precisely because they are the exact sum of their parts. (There are other reasons why they cannot be objects, but they are unnecessary here.) At this point, it becomes clear that objects must be created, since with only one exception all objects are man-made. The clock "lives" both physically, as a thing, but especially as an idea. Ideas are the only kind of "life" man is capable of creating--something out of nothing. But if man, who is certainly greater than the sum of his parts, can also be an object, it would follow logically that some intelligent being created him from nothing, and that man exists not only physically but as an "idea", as it were, in the mind of God.

We can say with surety, then, that an object must be 1) greater than the sum of its parts and 2) created. From this vantage point, we can see that the existence of the Room and its objects is almost undeniable proof of the existence of God in the Lost Room universe.

This argument can continue, but I'll save that for another time and another discussion. I apologize that my explication is not as clearly delineated as is probably necessary, but its the best I can do right now. I'll try to sharpen it up a bit more, if anyone would like to have a discussion/debate!

Cheers,

WRM

I like your analysis. It warrants further study.

I just thought of the third power : To NOT be reset when the door is closed.

The second power : to open the door to any door when exiting the room IF YOU HAVE THE KEY and the third power : to not be reset IF YOU HAVE THE KEY....means that the key has power INSIDE the room !!!!!!!

Which would make the key the prime object !

eh?

I would argue (and probably has already been said) that the key is the prime object because it is the only known object that does not lose it's power when it is inside the room. Also, it is the only object that truly belongs with the room itself...everything else is either the occupants property, or something placed there inside the room by the motel owners. Merely decoration as opposed to being inherently a part of the room.

I'm emoticon. Wasn't it stated in the series that Eddie was the Prime Object?

do we really know the key does not lose it's power inside the room

I don't recall the key ever being used inside the room

Actually Eddie states there is no prime object when he says that he's just an object like any other.

And the key does work inside the room (sort of) since you need to put it in the lock, concentrate on where you want to go and open it. I wonder if inside the lock counts as inside the room.

Has anyone ever discussed what would happen if you opened the door from inside the room without the key?

I don't remember a scene where the key is used in the room. Joe merely opens the door without using the key.

I agree with exyooper on this one. I don't think the key is actually "working" inside the room.

By the way, can anyone account for Joe's ability to go to doors he's never seen before (like the hospital ward in which he preempts Wally, or at Jennifer's home)?

That is a particularly clever part of the script. Jennifer leaves a picture of her “home” in Joe’s kitchen, thus making it possible for him to get there. I can’t say for sure about the hospital where he preempts Wally. My assumption is that he is sufficiently acquainted with the hospitals layout to guestimate a door. Note that when Joe goes to the prison with Karl, they do not always come out at the exact door they want to.
