Combined Powers

Speaking of combining object powers. I just did a quick calculation (well, not so quick). There are approximately 1,300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ways of combining 100 objects. That means that if our guys ever get around to making a series, there are at least as many possibilities for episodes. How could such a gold mine of opportunity not be mined?

This reminds me of when I was figuring out how many possible gate addresses could be produced by the Stargate.

100 objects would just melt my poor computer with all the factorials!

The hardest part was getting this math type into the string. I had to make a picture of it using ctl-alt-printscrn and load it as a picture.

Here is a Wikipedia page with the applicable mathematics:

Binomial Coefficients

Okay, now I see. I had to go dig out one of my statistics texts from college.

So, if one were to subscribe to one of the God Theories and getting all of the objects would let you talk to/represent/be/resurrect God, you probably would find all combinations of the Objects to be an excellent toolbox. While not actually infinite, you could probably find any effect you wanted in there, so long as you came upon the right set of Objects and the right means to activate it.

Woe to the unlucky collector who stumbles upon the combination of Objects that kickstarts a star or a black hole!

...on a lighter note, there is probably a combination effect that would let you herd cats, or divide by zero emoticon

Your mind went along exactly the same path as my own. When I stood back and pondered that number, I got to thinking how dangerous this sort of experimentation might be. We only know what the Conroy experiment did. We have no idea what other pitfalls might await would-be object experimenters! Once again, I am drooling and longing for more.

Yes your math is great and the posibilities are great as well. Now i would assume that there would be alot of negative effects so that means a lot of the combinations would not be good to well mix and stir.

Top notch and im glad you found out the number haha.

Re: Combined Powers

It occurs to me that there could be a whole science of combining objects—sort of like chemistry. You could build a good portion of the series around that science. Intelligent people who are privy to the objects and their powers could have all sorts of covert consultations trying to figure out what to expect if object M is combined with object J. Since the objects seem to have every kind of effect imaginable, the possibilities include everything that has ever been imagined. There could be a combination that makes everyone in the world forget their mother’s maiden name. I can imagine the trouble that would result from trying to track that one down. There could be a combination that causes everyone named Steve to be transported one hour back in time. There could be a combination that causes the earth to increase in mass by 3%. There could be a combination that interchanges the role of Santa and the Easter Bunny, but only in Delaware, so that all the children in Delaware now know that Santa brings eggs on Easter and the Bunny comes down the chimney on Christmas. There could be a combination that causes Santa to become real and historical. If you couldn’t find a way to make this series work, you would have to be the most unimaginative person in the world. More drooling!

Yes. It would be marvelous to have a science to figure out what happens when objects are combined, but while all that is great and would be an interesting. It should be a thing to have running in the back ground of the story. I think what made the story of TLR so truly great was the struggle of what happens to someone when they use or find out about the objects. Its great to think about the objects and to try to find out the mystery behind them, but i would think that them coming out with a science that can exactly predict combinations would not be the best thing for the series. For it takes away the "magic" of the objects and the Mystery of the show. Now doesn't mean that there is not a science to the objects and that that discovery can be being made while the show is going on. But all i can say is i can not wait for something more to come out.

I want to talk to Chris here soon and see if there is anything i can do to make something of TLR come out sooner. I have a friend that is a CEO of a Movie Entertainment company and can possibly get him to help in some way. And that is my X-mas Present to you all, and to Chris, haha. But everyone knows the movie biz is not a science so i will see what i can do, and will say now that i can not promise anything on anyones end.

But when i start something and have some news ill make a post about it

If you can do something to push things along, more power to you. Just remember the Hippocratic Oath and don’t do anything to make the patient worse.

I must admit, though, it really would be a crime for TLR to end here. Contemplating this subject has only reinforced that view. It is just too big a thing to be wasted. It is a thousand carat diamond just waiting to be cut.

And you are right: the idea of an “object science” should only be a background for the real drama. What it shows is how vast the possibilities for this thing are.
