Does the quarter work in the room?

After Kreutzfeld has the key and leaves Joe in the vault, he is shown stepping into room 10 while his son remains outside the door. At this moment, Kreutzfeld is shown standing in the room looking at his son standing outside the room. Both are visible in the same shot. Since it is the quarter in Kreutzfeld’s digestive system that generates his son, and since Kreutzfeld is in the room, why does his son still exist?

This scene is so deliberate that I can’t help but feel it is a clue to something. Any ideas?

I know the scene you mean. If Kreutzfeld's in the room the Quarter should fail to work and his son should vanish. I think it's just a production goof.

Maybe once a power is activated....it cannot be shut down...unless it's shut down in the room by The Occupant.

Then again...Paul's probally right.....production error.

It may just be a production error, but it really seems like a clue. The scene deliberately draws attention to this positioning. The way the boy looks in at Kreutzfeld but will not cross the threshold is very poignant.

Chuckles may have a viable theory. Also, could it be that objects work in the room but just won’t act on something else that is in the room? When The Weasel tries to use the pen on Joe, the door to room 10 is still open, but both Joe and the pen are in the room. Perhaps if you use one of the longer range objects, such as the scissors, you can stand in the room and act on something that is outside the room. Perhaps it is possible to stand in room 10 with the scissors and rotate something beyond the threshold of the door (assuming that the door is open and the target of rotation is visible).

It is a long shot, but this information may be critical to understanding the properties of the objects. I am still clinging to the idea that there may be a falsifiable theory.

I propose that the Quarter Effect is specific and not continuous. One imagines the living memory, and it comes into being. The QE was activated and has now been used <past tense>, and is not active again unless and until the user 'Quarter Effects' another memory into being. The living memory therefore wanders around on its own until whenever the QE expires/the battery runs out/whatever in two or three days.

Therefore his son would disappear only if he attempted entry into the Room.

I don't know the medical variable here, but that seem to be a long time. A nondigested object would pass through your digestive tract in far less than three days, right?

Excellent point. There must be a persistence of effect like you have described.

It appears that the person generating the memory incarnation also has the ability to shut it down, since Kreutzfeld’s son disappears in the vault. The act of suppressing an incarnation may be an initial act that persists as well. This would indicate that while Kreutzfeld was in the room he could not have made Isaac go away even if he wanted to. Maybe, oddly enough, that was the whole point of the scene.

I really enjoy that idea. Kreutzfeld is kind of a savant with respect to his son. In some ways, he's been a genius of plotting and design ever since his death. But in others he hasn't apparently thought through the consequences at all.

I like this idea a lot. Isaac does seem to be wandering around on his own quite a bit. Perhaps once the quarter is swallowed and Kreutfeld wills him up he just wanders around until the effect wears off, or the quarter is "passed."

Or it could be that he changed the incarnation from Isaac to Anthony.

While Kreutzfeld is a genius, he's also clearly obsessed, possibly to the point of being insane. After all, he seems to be repeatedly swallowing a quarter that has passed through him. ewwww!

This has led me to a flurry of speculation about the quarter. Can it be used to summon an animal, an inanimate object, more than one person, a person holding some useful weapon, a fantasy person, a person on the other side of a door who could open it for you, yourself?

If we go strictly by "it has the power to bring memories to life" including "living memories" then it would have to be something you've directly experienced which would rule out fantasy characters.

Other than that, I don't know.
