A New Event Theory

OK, I have a new theory of the event. This one is much simpler and cleaner than any I have previously constructed. I got it from watching that Sound of Thunder movie that Tod got me to watch. It is a time travel theory.

To understand this theory, it is necessary to understand a basic concept of relativity. Objects move through time in much the same way that they move through space. In fact, motion through space and motion through time seem to be interchangeable. When an object moves faster through space, it moves more slowly through time because its momentum through time is redirected through space. This is why time slows down for fast moving objects.

Now, suppose that an object moving forward through time somehow collided with an object moving backward through time. The object moving forward through time might loose its momentum. In a sense, it would be frozen in time. For this object, no time would pass in the normal sense. Possibly, such an object would become calcified in a manner similar to the post-event objects in room 10. It is possible, then, that room 10 and all the objects in room 10 lost their momentum through time as a result of such a collision.

The problem is that in order for such a collision to take place and get the precise results that were achieved, the objects moving backward through time would have to have exactly the same mass and configuration as the object moving forward through time. This could only happen if it were deliberate. The question is, why would this be the result of a deliberate action?

One of the problems with time travel is that any interference with the past would almost certainly have a catastrophic effect. The only way this could be avoided is if the time travelers somehow avoided interfering with the past in any way whatsoever. One way this problem might be solved (not really, but perhaps in a science fiction fantasy series) would be to pluck someone out of time and replace them with a time traveler that is identical in every way. This time traveler would have to have the exact mass and the exact dimensions of the person he was to replace. During his visit he would have to retrace the steps of the person he was substituting for exactly. He couldn’t waver one iota from this protocol.

Suppose that time travelers decided to use Eddie McCleister for this purpose. He might be a good choice because he was on a trip and would see a lot of the period that the time travelers might want to see. They could pop Eddie, the room around him, and all the objects in the room out of his time and immediately replace them with an identical room containing identical objects and the time traveler.

Now, here is how the TLR scenario might come about. They would be sending the replacement room, replacement objects, and time traveler back in time to replace the originals. Suppose they missed their window by just an instant. Perhaps the replacement objects would collide with the original objects. The original objects might be stopped in time and the replacement objects might be transported to the future by mistake. So, Eddie, his room, and all the objects in it would be frozen in time and the intended replacement objects would be brought back to the future.

The people who attempted the experiment would be immediately apprised of the situation. They would also know that it might have catastrophic effects if not corrected.

The problem is this. Eddie and all his objects were frozen in time, but not in space. Eddie might be able to walk out of the room and take some of the objects with him (again, only in a science fiction fantasy). The time experimenters have a new problem. Not only have they damaged the past, the damage is starting to loose coherency.

They develop a solution. They don’t dare send anything solid back in time to correct the problem, but they can send a kind of disembodied artificial intelligence back in time: perhaps some sort of quantum intelligence. The function of this intelligence is to somehow bring the objects together into the room so that the time experimenters can somehow reaccelerate the room and all the objects in it and put it back into time. Here is their plan. They implant an intelligence in the objects that does two things. First, so that the inhabitants of the time will be compelled to restore the objects to the room, they cause the objects to manipulate the inhabitants behavior so that they will naturally be compelled to do this. Second, so that the objects will be easy to identify as such, they give them distinctive magical powers. So that the inhabitants who eventually restore the objects to their original locations know exactly where to put them, they cause one of the objects, the Polaroid, to act as a sort of chart. That is why the Polaroid shows the exact location of the objects in the room at the exact moment when the experiment was attempted.

If the experimenters can manage to get all the objects exactly where they were at the moment of the experiment, then they can correct their mistake and their timeline will be restored.

This model might also explain a problem with the photograph of Eddie and Mabel. It is clear that this photograph is of a couple sitting in front of a Christmas tree. Yet, on the back it says “Summer 1959”. If the objects sent back in time did not collide perfectly with the objects moving forward in time, it is possible that some small bit of matter was knocked further back into time than 1961. Perhaps it was sent back to a time well before the birth of Jesus. If this small amount of matter landed in, perhaps, 4 billion BC, it may have increased the mass of the earth and slowed the rotation of the earth just enough so that by the time Jesus was born, he was born in the winter rather than in the summer. (Again, only in a science fiction fantasy. Actually, no one knows when Jesus was born.) As a result, modern people might celebrate Christmas in the winter, rather than in the summer when they were originally supposed to.

Ahhhhhhhhh, my head!!!!!! But I get the jist. Got some qualities of Quantum Leap in there. We might get some answers from there too.
