Irony
So I was watching The Lost Room on my DVR recorded from 12/2006 and I see the commercial advertising the upcoming premier of Warehouse 13.
Even while The Lost Room was actually playing, 13 was trying to steal the limelight. Frustrating.

Re: Irony
I never realized that. So they never had any intention of creating a sequel. That really blows!

Re: Irony
I have been and to a lesser degree am a podcaster. One of the early monster podcasters was Scott Sigler. He was shopping a story to the SciFi network. This is how he describe their thinking process. "We don't want monsters you have to explain." I think that speaks volumes about how they see their audience. If its too smart, dump it down.

Re: Irony
As a follow up, I was totally wrong.
I may have watched The Lost Room when it originally aired, but apparently my Tivo recording of it was from much later.
Sorry about that. <hehe>

Re: Irony
They were working on developing Warehouse 13 simultaneously with TLR, I believe. I dimly recall seeing an announcement that they had hired someone to develop it, simultaneously with preproduction of TLR. So they had multiple similar stews on the stove, to coin a phrase. Almost exactly a year after they decided not to make an ongoing series or a second miniseries of TLR, I saw a screener of the uncompleted W13 pilot.
I *think* what happened, although my memory of relevant conversations differs from Chris' (and anyway I'm just speculating on their motivations) they really wanted a more traditional series that requires less explanation and which can be played in more or less any order. To be fair, those kinds of shows are *much* easier to get people to watch. When we couldn't pitch a version of TLR that fit with those parameters, they passed and they made W13 instead, I guess.

Re: Irony
Obviously they did it because they thought it was the best business decision. I am a capitalist, so I respect that.
Still, I cannot help but think they could have reached a little higher and tried a little harder. Somewhere down the line, the channel that was supposed to be a refuge for science fiction fans became the home of professional wrestling.
I cannot tell you for sure where they left the high road, but I know the low road when I see it.
