To Break an Egg
This has troubled me for a long time. Karl is rich, and surrounds himself in the style of the 17th and 18th century.
Why is he breaking an egg with a 20th century letter opener? Wouldn't a sterling knife own by Wellington or Napoleon have been more his style? He doesn't strike me as the wrong tool for the right job sort of guy.
If we counter with its just the choice of the art director, then we end up with a stronger level of disconnect. Karl's office is 17/18th century and said art director is not going to let a anomalous item sneak in. That letter-opener was meant to be there.
We have heard that the watch changes an egg from raw soft to hard boiled, but last time I checked boiling takes water. so somehow the watch changes the condition of the egg. What if this change of state made the shell stronger then steel, perhaps only another object could crack its surface.
I love the fact that of all the object this collective has chosen this objects as a wild card object. And having one I do like to think my letter opener is The Letter Opener, but it is also likely that the one sitting on Karl's desk might just be the one.
As always this is just conjecture but food for thought.

Re: To Break an Egg
Yes very interesting theory, altough Wally does not give out the way the egg is cracked when telling the tale... should he leave out such a detail? Maybe. Maybe he did not know but some rumor about it... only Chris knows

Re: To Break an Egg
I would go with Occam's razor.
The simplest explanation for a modern letter opener is that it is a gift from someone close and has sentimental value instead of intrinsic value.

Re: To Break an Egg
Considering all the errors we've found so far, I wouldn't chalk it up to being too significant.
But it is a distinct possibility. Something to think about at least.
