Here is the image clarified as much as possible:

(clarification provided by MarkAnthonyRamsay)

The Painting was first discovered by Ghinius Sahalin while making screen caps. It appears for only one frame in The Eye and the Prime Object during Dr. Martin Ruber’s vision in the desert. Even then, only a portion is visible. We would not have gained useful information about The Painting if not for behind the scenes images provided by Jess (ABQPROPGUY).

After good images of the painting were available, it remained a source of mystery for over a year as object collectors searched the Internet looking for some clue to what it was called or what it represented. The big break came on June 24, 2009, early in the morning, when MarkAnthonyRamsay posted a clarified image of the painting, thus reinvigorating the search.

On that early morning, Mark, Rollerball, and Spikosauropod (the author) began a concerted effort to find the painting. Finally, Rollerball discovered these images that seemed to be of the same tree:

Rollerball noted that one of the images contained a brief description: Le Conte Oak, University of California Grounds, Berkeley.

A point by point comparison with available images proved this is the correct tree:

This was the opening that led to a complete understanding of the painting. Rollerball subsequently uncovered the story of the two brothers, John Le Conte and Joseph Le Conte, that the tree in the painting was dedicated to:

The powers of The Painting, if they exist, are completely unknown.

Useful eBay search terms:

berkeley oak
le conte oak
leconte oak

So far, no collector has found the actual painting. The search is underway. Plans are also in the works to make copies using available information:

I just wish we could zoom to the bottom right corner. There may be a signature.

I'm still in two minds whether this is actually a painting at all, I've a gut feeling it's like all the other coloured photo prints we've seen as postcards and such. I think image noise from the low pixel count and digital enlargement process has made the image fog out giving the impression of paint when it's not. I hope I'm wrong, but I get that feeling. I can understand an amateur painting falling into the hands of a props department, but a known work by a well know artist I have to start doubting. We really need to confirm what it truly is, print, watercolour or photo print. If it were a painting the signature would either be on the front, or just off the edge of the image, the frame type doesn't help as those tend to overlap the edge a fair way.

Exactly. I can't shake that feeling, either. Are you thinking this could be a blown-up image of a postcard? None of the postcards we've looked at have this exact image of the Oak; but we might be looking in the wrong places. What if the image comes from an old postcard from, say, the 30's?

As I recall, the guy at UC Berkeley mentioned it could be in one of their yearbooks from the 30's. I noticed we have some collectors in California, and I heartily recommend someone check those out. That might be out best bet!

Yeah that exactly the same what they told me when I contacted them before you, they claim it may be in there, but I'm guessing it may just be something close rather than the exact "painting." I don't think it's a blown up postcard, I'm thinking more like a tinted photo print much like some of the posters that are currently available. Having said that though I'd hope to be proved wrong and get a good detailed close up of the prop so we can tell what it is. That would put all our minds at rest once and for all. I have to assume that there's more than one of those out there, it can't be the only one in existence and that to find another copy we have to assume people don't know what it is, namely the tree's history or type of tree and will under-describe it on eBay.
