Re: Theories of the Objects and the Event

The Collectors’ Vault: 10 Objects deemed too terrible to be allowed in the world, by people who were obsessed with finding, acquiring, and controlling these Objects. For an addict to try to lock away any variety of his/her drug of choice, well, it’s a rare thing. That tells us that these ten must have been particularly nasty. Think “Apocalypse Objects”. Here is my quick guide, with historical commentary in italics. Enjoy!
-Mr. Whitless

SOAP WRAPPER - Any pregnant animal or human that comes within a 100 yard radius of bearer will collapse with cramps immediately and miscarry within 5 hours; the mother becomes sterile. Bearer gains rapid healing. Bearer can no longer use verbal profanity or obscenity.
Miscarry effect was discovered when object hunter B. Strizke returned to the Collectors with the item. Mrs. Arlene Conroy miscarried, as did her pregnant cat. This event prompted Mr. Conroy to reluctantly returned to the collectors, explaining that he had to be in it so he could protect Arlene.
There is some speculation that this event led to her later remarkable intuition about object effects.

BINOCULARS – Look at any tree or home through the correct end, a severe thunderstorm starts above target, regardless of the weather. During storm, look through them backwards at any domesticated animal, an F4 tornado starts above previous target (tree or house), lasting approx. 15 minutes. Bearer cannot control Tornado. Storm ends 5 minutes after tornado or after 45 minutes with no tornado. Anyone injured even slightly by the tornado’s flying debris will die of complications within 3 days, regardless of the severity or size of the wound. Bearer is immune to this effect. Triggering the event exhausts the bearer; this could possibly be done twice in a day, but bearer would have to be in excellent condition. Bearer now gets horrible nightmares regularly, disrupting his sleep schedule significantly. Bearer gains perfect “dead-reckoning” for any place he/she has ever been as long as he/she is the bearer.
The collectors called these “The Dorothy Glasses”. Mrs. Conroy once used them to fight a forest fire in Washington state, to good effect. This was the last object voted into the Final Vault.

DRESS SHIRT - Compels obedience from any unmarried adult under 47 including anything but murder or suicide.
With both cufflinks on the shirt, Bearer can compel murder or suicide as well, though only once per person for the enhanced effect.
Add the Tie, Bearer gets limited time-travel (10 seconds forward, 17 seconds backward, 19 seconds time-stop). Bearer lose the compel obedience effect permanently, but now anyone who talks with Bearer for at least 5 minutes straight will begin to consider Bearer an important, pivotal figure in history, destined for greatness, and people who have previously been compelled will treat Bearer similarly as long as Bearer is bearer of the shirt, even if the Bearer loses the cufflinks and/or tie.
Add the pants, and bearer never loses an argument or at arm-wrestling. Add one shoe, and bearer becomes a strategic prodigy, add both, a tactical prodigy and dead-shot with any pistol or large-caliber rifle as well. All these effects follow the objects.
Bearer gains an inspiring and effective “public speaking” voice. Only this is a permanent effect. If bearer loses shirt, bearer loses intelligence, estimated at 20 IQ points. If an ex-bearer recovers the shirt via violence or trickery, bearer gains estimated 25 IQ points back.
The collectors referred to this as “The Napoleon Shirt”. This was the first object to be intentionally locked away, in the original collectors’ vault, in the desert far behind the motel.

FOOT POWDER – When placed outside, upright, in the sunlight, starts a potentially lethal plague in surrounding area (small city size). As long as it remains in place, and in sunlight at least 6 hours/day, plague will spread and worsen. Fatality rate tops out at around 70-80%. If laid flat, instead, surrounding area is attacked by large, aggressive swarms of stinging insects of the local variety that actively seek out targets; swarms dissipate after two hours. Bearer is immune to both effects, as are his blood relatives or any other Object Bearer. Bearer gains strong sexual “magnetism”. Bearer loses the ability to do math in his/her head.
Most of the collectors didn’t take this object seriously, until one of them tossed it through an open window onto the sun-baked pavement. The half-ton swarm of horseflys changed their minds. This object’s sexual effect is probably indirectly responsible for the conception of at least five children.

GLASS EYE - Can heal or destroy all flesh. Must be in bearer’s eye socket to function. Slowly degrades vision in the other eye, may lead to eventual blindness. Thought to induce clinical depression and other mental illness in bearer. Bearer can see through the glass eye. With repeated use, bearer gains a limited “x-ray” vision. While using x-ray vision, bearer cannot see through normally transparent objects, i.e., windows, water, plexiglass, or through “pure” metals.
This effect was discovered when a Collector known now only as “Bill” was hit by a car in front of the motel. Sure he was dying, he begged Mr. Conroy to cut out his eye and replace it with the object, so he could know what it did (maybe) before he died. Though Mr. Conroy declined the request, MRS. Conroy stepped in with “The Knife”, to empty his eyesocket and install the object. The eye socket and surrounding flesh healed immediately when the eye was put in place. Bill looked down at his mangled hips and legs, and they straightened, knit, and healed in about 15 agonizing seconds. Unfortunately, an hour and a half later, he looked at himself in a large full-length mirror when absolutely furious, and annihilated his own body accidentally. The destroy effect is apparently reflectable, and self-inflictable.
Recommend an eyepatch.

IRON – When plugged in and put to the correct setting, kills all plant life in a roughly one-mile radius over a 24-hour period. If left on, radius doubles every day at dawn. If turned to the wrong setting, bearer gets a strong electric shock and blacks out. Too many of these shocks, and bearer’s thinking becomes cloudy and he/she is easily influenced by other bearers. Bearer cannot starve or dehydrate. Bearer develops anemia. The anemia is permanent, the starve/dehyd effect follows the object.
This is the object that proved to the collectors that objects could not be destroyed. Mr. Conroy, Mr. Carter and Mr. Clarke went to extraordinary lengths to try and break or damage it. Called the “Doomsday Appliance” by the collectors. Second item voted into the Final vault.

Re: Theories of the Objects and the Event

RABBIT FOOT - Bearer can get away with any crime he/she can commit or has committed, including murder. It simply never occurs to anyone that it could have been bearer. Those witnessing the crime will have no memory of bearer being there. Law Enforcement take it for granted that it wasn’t bearer. Bearer becomes fluent in two additional modern languages, chosen at random. This effect is permanent. Bearer is always bored; nothing is exciting anymore. This effect follows the item.
This was a pivotal weapon in the 1st cabal war. The Conroy faction used it for funding/Intelligence operations and targeted killing/crippling of key opposition players. John Clarke was the most frequent user. Mr Conroy still blames the foot for Mr. Clarke’s 1st suicide attempt.

SHAVING BRUSH - Waved in the air at a large (500+) public gathering, starts a riot which spreads gradually to a two-mile radius, and only stops when there have been 33 casualties, or three hours have passed, whichever comes last. Could probably start wars if used cleverly. While the object bearer is immune to the rioting effect, he/she can become one of the casualties. Riot continues even if bearer leaves or is killed. Bearer becomes obsessive/compulsive about personal grooming, and very “twitchy”.
The Brush is a violent Object; you can feel malevolence flowing from it if you just touch it. This object inspired the theory that objects might be, in some way, sentient, or at least self-aware, and have an agenda of their own. Not surprisingly, The Brush figures largely in the triggering of the 1st war. Bearers of the brush always come to a bad end.

LEFT SHOE – Quickly disassembles things down to their component parts. Can be used to level large buildings within 8 seconds, small ones within 2. Works on things car-sized and smaller almost instantly. Works only on man-made inanimate objects. Can target 2 things at once. The bearer can always tell if he/she is being watched, and from what general direction. Bearer acquires a crippling phobia of air or sea travel.
This was the second item Mrs. Conroy figured out after her miscarriage. The first was the Watch.

LEFT SHOELACE – Bearer is immune to attacks using metal weapons, gains increased ability in hand-to-hand combat, and becomes more aggressive and much less trustworthy. If tied around bearer’s neck, bearer becomes psychologically “invisible” to others. Tied around either wrist, bearer gains genius level IQ but becomes a sporadically violently sociopathic for 16 hours. If carried in a pocket, bearer knows all the deepest secrets of anyone he/she shakes hands with.
However, if worn on a non-object shoe, bearer can diagnose and recommend a treatment for any ailment, and sometimes even regrow severed limbs, simply by putting his/her hand on their forehead. The treatment recommended always works, even though most are bizarre and sound like voodoo.
Bearer has near-constant heartburn, which is not responsive to medication or the shoelace effect.
Due to the amazing healing effect his was the only item put into the Final Vault by a less-than-unanimous vote. While with the original collectors, it healed 35 blind people, 61 deaf people, 13 paraplegics, 4 quadraplegics, 18 diabetics, 58 cancers, 1 hemophilia, 16 assorted STDs, 23 snakebites, 2 colorblindness, and 37 heart attacks or strokes.
It was also responsible for the “Devil’s Night” serial killings in Reno, Nevada, where, in one night, 8 young women and 5 young men were kidnapped and murdered en masse, in truly horrific ways. The killer was never caught, thanks to the rabbit’s foot. This event was one the final trigger for the first war.

If put on the left shoe, left shoe can also now disassemble targeted organic things and creatures, but down to the molecular level, and more slowly and painfully. Effect works within 350 yards with clear line-of-sight, and can affect 3 items or creatures at once. The horrifying sight of the effect is extremely mentally scarring on any witnesses. Excessive use ( >2 times in a week ) gives bearer leprosy-like symptoms, unless bearer has both shoes. Bearer must stop wearing the shoe for the “leprosy” to heal.
If put on the right shoe, bearer gains remarkable hearing and night vision and perfect pitch in addition to the shoelace’s native effects. .
If worn or carried for more than 9 hours straight, bearer becomes seriously nauseated. If worn or carried for more than 20 hours straight, bearer becomes seriously ill with the flu.
No one enjoys the bearer’s company anymore.
Another powerful weapon in the 1st cabal war, its contribution was limited by the steep and difficult learning curve to properly “sight” your target when using the shoe/shoelace combination effect, being only allowed 2 practice shots a week. Used mainly by the opposition cabal, though the Conroy faction captured it just months before the end of the war.

The Shoe Polish, The Pocket Knife, The Nail Clippers, research incomplete

Creative. I'll give you that.

I don't like to speculate, because if the comic book ever comes out we may get an ACTUAL list of powers for some of those objects.

Even though the eye was in the vault, it's power was still known and considered the "most powerful" object besides the key.
