"When a bidder enters a bid, eBay uses only as much of that bid as is necessary to put the bidder slightly ahead of every other bidder. "

This is by far the most enraging thing I have ever found out about a website.

Just to make sure you understand, if another bidder then enters a higher bid, eBay automatically raises your bid (within the bid you have entered) to a level just above the other bidders new bid.

Your max bid is still valid. If you had at any time previously bid $30. Then the infidel would not have won it for $20. He would have had to outbid your max bid to win.

Not to beat you up, but if you just mean it seams like he won by $0.49 that wouldn't necessarily be true. If in those final seconds, he bid $50, then your $30 would have been useless. He would have still won. Just for $30.49 instead of $20.49.

When it comes down to the final 10 seconds...don't try to outbid someone, simply enter the absolute Maximum you are willing to pay.

Wait, I am not sure I understand those last two comments.

What I took from them:

x=person 1, y=person 2, z=person 3

x bids $1.49

x now must pay $1.49 if they win.
current bid $1.49

y bids $100

y must now pay $1.99 if they win
current bid $100

x bids $20

y must now pay $20.49 if they win
current bid $100

z bids $30.49

y must now pay $30.99 if they win
current bid $100

(Highest bid stays, people are allowed to bid under highest bid in order to increase amount the highest bidder is required to pay.)

Yes, exactly.

All bids are secret.

This 'bid the max what you can pay' benefits all parties.

The bidder does not have to wait and watch till the last second to see if someone overbid him. He can rest assured, that if he does not win, someone was willing to pay more than he did.

The seller always gets the highest possible price for his item, if there is any competition.

This is how it usually works, but with The Collectors, we have twisted the rules a bit to our benefit as usually the items we covet are not normally coveted by others than us.

That is why we have created these rules of gentlemanship and thus the first collector entering in the auction mark the item as his by entering a marker bid. Smallest possible to win. And claims the bid in this forum. Then he waits up until the last minute to pour in his HIGHEST bid.

(this because we do not know if the infidel has already put large bid in, we just do not see it, it is always possible the infidel indeed is willing to pay more than you on the item, but atleast you gave it all you got)

This is to eliminate other interested parties (infidels) to have time to outbid you (if they notice you have inserted a large sum on the thing). And some infidels do this just for fun. So let's not give them an opporturnity to do so.

If you bid the highest initially, the auction would have enough time to run (if enough bidders) to meet and overcome your max bid and leave you to wonder if you can afford to pay more or loose.

Our method allows someone outbid you with mere pennies. And putting in your absolute max bid in the almost end wil flush the infidel off-guard.

No matter how few seconds left, the automatic programming of the auctionhouse (fe. eBay) WILL run all max bids against each other and see who has largest max bid.

The winner will have the item for the price the runner up was willing to pay max + the rise.

Cat is right. You now understand the science of a "sniper" bid. We are all a bunch of snipers.

Ultimately, Max bid always wins.

What I should have done was bargained with you and agreed that I would put in MY max bid, and if it sells for your max bid ($30 in this case) I would relinquish the item to you. And if it sold for more than your max bid, then I would win instead of the infidel.

Hindsight is 20/20

That would be a great addition to our ruleset
