Mental Agility
I was thinking of Eddie. He lived in the early days of our country. When he became an object, it is possible that his ability to learn and adapt was hindered by his inability to "Change". Objects stay the same without changing.
Joe lives in modern times, he understands computers and complex technology.
It is possible that Joe is much more suitable to being an object than Eddie was. The complexity of interacting with all objects would be easier for a modern person than for someone who grew up in the 40's and 50's.

Re: Mental Agility
I think Joe would indeed have a better relationship with the objects and possibly the room itself. Further he would have a different skill manifested. Eddie could keep the objects away, the conservation of object might have its own form of micro physics. I would pose the possibility that Joe could have gotten a inverse of repulsion, he could have gotten the ability of draw objects to himself. If Joe is the second act of the great Event, along with Rupert, Unification seems a likely outcome.
The third act could be having the time-line deals with all the objects back together. For a major head twist what if the the regathering of the object is what caused the event in the first place. A Eddie/Joe loop.

Re: Mental Agility
Interesting. Reminds me of the theory that the universe is a never-ending cycle of explosion and implosion, expansion and contraction.
Objects attract each other, yet Eddie is strangely able to repel them or somehow able to create circumstances where they do not pass close to him. What makes Eddie different? Does his conscious thought grant him special power over the objects? The objects can hear each other, so perhaps Eddie just has to will them to stay away from him? I suppose the ashtray or the scissors really have no will of their own, so that the fact that Eddie HAS a will could certainly make him quite a bit more interesting.
All of the objects seem to have powers. Could Eddie's (now Joe's) power be the ability to speak to or control the other objects? Or is there some other power he has that we do not know or understand?

Re: Mental Agility
I think one of Eddie's/Joe's powers would be to automatically know what an Objects power is, it's location and if it's in use.
Other than that...all options are open.

It's location being known and which object it is, being know is confirmed. Eddie said, I knew the wedding photo was coming and hoped it was Mabel.
He knew it was the photo even from a great distance. If that kind of divinition is possible, then yes, he might "sense" the object's power as well.

Re: Mental Agility
I had always assumed that the Occupant was a sort of control center for all the Objects, like the pilot of a ship. It plays into the idea that the Objects are tools to reshape reality and would therefore have the need for someone with a separate will to control them.
It does seem plausible that "feeling" what each Object is could also be a form of knowing what they do.
I still believe that the Occupant is the Prime Object no matter what Eddie told Joe.

Agreed.
Eddie controlled all the objects, including the room itself.
