The Polaroid

Ok... Gotta say I love the Polaroid that I got from Paul. But being a prop maker myself... I'm always looks to go that one step too far. emoticon

Does anyone know if the original Polaroid picture prop was an undeveloped Polaroid 41,42,43, or 44 (All now unavailble types used in the 95A/B) or if it was just a totally made up bit of card like Paul's replica?

If it was a mangled vintage Polaroid snap... then I'd be tempted to find some old stock and expose it and distress it accordingly. emoticon

But I don't want to waste the search/money if it is me just being "Over-Script-Critical". emoticon Been there with other props in the past.

I’m working on this problem. I’ll have an answer in a day or two.

I’m pretty sure this eBay listing answers your question. I have sent a message to the seller requesting the exact model of camera.

I also asked if the dimensions given are for the image or for the total photograph including the Border.

Re: The Polaroid

I can now say with a fair amount of certainty that a Polaroid picture from this period had an image size of 67 mm by 87 mm (2 10/16 inches by 3 7/16 inches) and an overall size of 76 mm by 98 mm (3 inches by 3 14/16 inches), including the ruffle.

Re: The Polaroid

I just bought a box of unused film (type 42 roll film) and the 100% proper size of The Polaroid is 3 1/4" X 4 1/4"

Unused film is on ebay and you want type 40 - type 46 roll film for a 95 series camera.

Chances are the film will be no good....but I plan on using my film to make a 100% Polaroid Object and taking the rest of the pics of family in period correct settings. I currently want 2 to 3 more packs of film so I can have one unopened pack for my case and I will use the rest.

When it comes, you can measure an actual picture frame.

Re: The Polaroid

So... are we assuming then that a Type 40 (to type 46) Polaroid film stock was used to make the original prop? Or do people think it's more important to be "script exact" in this case?

That's more of my question. emoticon

I've been making props for years... from Sci-fi to B&W Clasic Musicals. And it's one of my common questions for people: Which is more important... reproducing a Prop made and used by the first film crew, OR making a Prop based on the Script even if it ends up different then the film used prop because you've been more exact to the script?

Re: The Polaroid

I am convinced from what I have found that the prop was not true to life.

Our usual practice is to give precedence to show accuracy. A good example is The Deck of Cards. They are clearly impossible, yet we imitate them exactly.

Here is an actual Polaroid of the type depicted in the miniseries:

The borders are a different width and the one in the show has no ruffles on the side.

This one is similar:

It looks to me like the prop makers tried to imitate an original pretty closely. I doubt it is an actual Polaroid. Why do that? Why go to the trouble and expense when there is almost no chance that anyone will be able to tell.

Re: The Polaroid

Exactly. emoticon That's why I ask.

Believe me, some circles of fan can be very particular. Prop makers go for cheapest and best looking... so if you need a 1961 first edition Comic book only to have the cover seen, you just print out a Cover and make yourself a new Book. emoticon But for the fans... having the "real" first edition comic with real insides tends to be what they want.

This is the same in my opinion.

The script calls for the 1961 vintage Polaroid type 40-43 based picture without developed image, assuming from the Polaroid 96A/B also in the room. Now if I were the prop maker, I'd just nock up a "fake" polaroid from reference photos or less since it's not going to have much detail. (it being black, white, and crinkled)

And I think you, Spikosaur, have found the reference photo I've been looking for online. If you are sure the car photo was done using Polaroid Type 40-44 film... ie, made using a 95A/B....

Then I'd be happy to say that the prop people used either a real photo, or tried to re-create one (more likely). Insted of just making up the look themselves without regards to what a real photo of the type looked like. (ie, didn't take artistic license)

Thanks Spikosaur.
