The Knife

The Knife

classification: paulian

The knife appears in The Eye and the Prime Object. It shows briefly on the Sood’s computer when Joe Miller and Howard (The Weasel) Montague visit the Sood with the picture of Eddie and Mabel.

The knife is similar to a vintage Kamp King. However, it is actually a Camper manufactured by Ideal.

When The Knife is shown on the Sood’s computer, the shackle is on the right with the shield facing upward and the blades facing away. An actual Ideal Camper (or any knife of this style) is the reverse of this:

Other images provided by Jess show that the knife in the miniseries is actually as it appears on the Sood’s computer:

In other words, the actual knife in the miniseries is the mirror image of any knife that has actually been marketed.

This represented a conundrum for object collectors. However, Chucklbunny discovered that the ends of the knife have tabs that are easily bent up so that the casing can be removed and reversed. It was later discovered that the shield bearing the name “CAMPER” must also be reversed. Jintosh verified that this can be done by unlatching the shield from the back while the casing is removed. When this is done, the knife looks exactly like the one in the available images.

The knife has no known individual power. When combined with the watch, it grants a kind of telepathy.

On the non-shackle end of the knife, pry both tabs up with a small screwdriver:

Take the blade section out of the casing. While the casing is off, unlatch and reverse the shield. Rotate the blade section and slide it back into the casing.

Bend both tabs back to secure.

Re: The Knife

I just made a rather disturbing discovery.

Prior to us having images from Jess that showed the objects in the inventory in detail, it was impossible to read the inscription on the knife. Now that we can read it, I have realized that the modification we have developed does not get the correct result.

The shackle on the knife in the inventory is on the end of the knife close to the letter “R” in the word CAMPER. The shackle on our knives is on the end close to the letter “C”. When the casing is removed, the relative positions of the shackle and the inscription remain the same. There is no easy modification that can be done to match the knife in the inventory.

I am thinking that maybe the inscription shield can be unlatched from the back and reversed while the casing is off, but I haven’t tried it yet. However this once again raises the question of how such a knife came to be. Before, it was easy enough to suppose that some child had tampered with the casing, but this is beginning to look like an elaborate and deliberate undertaking.

And the answer is yes. The shield has the same clips as the side panels. It can be switched only when the side is off. (I just pulled mine off to verify.)

OK, so the knife can be modified by taking the casing off and reversing it and simultaneously reversing the shield.

Remarkable! I really wonder how all this came about.

Good catch Spike!

Now, if only I can get the case off of my knife to make the proper modification.
