The Deck of Cards

The Deck of Cards

The Deck of Cards appears in The Comb and the Box when Dr. Martin Ruber is introduced to the Order of the Reunification. It plays a pivotal role in later scenes.

When the joker side of the deck is held to a persons face they convulse and experience a shocking montage of vivid images related to Room 10 of the Sunshine Motel. These images include the person’s direct experiences with the objects. As a residual effect, the person experiences disturbing dreams related to the Motel and Room 10.

The deck of cards is a hybrid created by pasting the joker from a deck of Arrco playing cards to the front of a Remembrance with Redislip box. It is virtually impossible that there was ever a deck of cards like this, since the Redislip coating and the plastic coating depicted on the Joker card represent mutually exclusive manufacturing standards.

The Arrco decks with the correct jokers come in both poker size and bridge size. The Redislip box comes only in bridge size, so you should get the Arrco joker in that size also.

Creating the deck of cards is fairly strait forward. The Arrco cards and the box are sold regularly on eBay. If you are concerned about damaging a vintage box of cards, you can attach the joker with a piece of folded masking tape. The wrinkle in the lower left corner can be created by laminating and crinkling several pieces of ordinary paper. The tax stamp is typically in the wrong place. To remedy this, scan or copy it from one end, cut it out, and attach it to the other. Again, if you are concerned about damaging the deck, you can attach it with masking tape.

Useful eBay search terms:

redi slip
redislip
arrco cards

Often, collectors also want the leather case shown in the miniseries. Christopher Leone, one of the miniseries’ three writers, has stated that the case is not an object. Nevertheless, it is a nice accessory.

A member of The Collectors, Pizmeyre, discovered that the case can be made from a cigarette case kit available from Tandy Leather (King Size Cigarette Case Kit #4119-00) The kit is meant to be stitched together with leather cord and then tooled. However, when it is put together with rivets and the tooling is omitted, it looks exactly like the case in the miniseries.

Here is the case as it is meant to be constructed:

Here is the original image posted by Pizmeyre:

Here is what the case looks like when it is purchased:

To construct the case you will need these items:

Saddle tan oil based leather dye, large nickel rapid rivets, a riveter, and the accompanying anvil:

Everything you need can be purchased from Stecksstore.

The leather must be dyed before the case is constructed. To do this, wet the leather thoroughly and apply the dye with long even strokes. Two coats must be applied and the leather must be allowed to dry between each coat.

The riveting is difficult. Wet the leather before riveting to make it more pliable. Every rivet must be set with one hammer strike. If you attempt a second strike, the rivet will bend and ruin the leather. To get the last rivets you will need some kind of hard square object that will fit into and fill the case: an expendable sharpening stone or metal block.

After the kit is assembled, it must be stretched to the correct size and shape. The stretching can be done with a block made from a deck of appropriately sized cards. The dimensions should be exactly as shown. It needs to have an attached handle so that it can be romoved when the case has dried. First soak the case in water. The block can be coated in mink oil before it is inserted so that it will slide out without damaging the case:

To give the case a nice glossy appearance, rub on mink oil.

The deck of cards is relatively easy to make, but the leather case is extremely difficult and frustrating. Do not attempt it unless you are committed.

I asked Chris about the case and he said it is NOT an Object.

I fixed it.

That is the advantage of having this out in front and fluid: we can iron out all the kinks.

Yes, but you should check with the seller to see if the cards are poker width (2½") or bridge width (2¼"). To match up the joker with the Remembrance Redi-Slip case, you need the bridge size.
