Back then the slide rule was the pocket calculator of its day, I don't think it makes him a scientist. I think he's more of a G-man of some sort.

Back then paper and pencil were the pocket calculator of the day. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the modern day mindless use of calculators is in any way equivalent to the mastery of an elegant tool like a slide rule.
