Re: The Wall Painting
Wow. Great work Roller!
And we can actually read the marker. That came a lot sooner than I expected. More lore for the catalogue entry when I get around to it.

Re: The Wall Painting
That dedication plate is the original one that sat on the tree itself, as shown in the Luna photo. At some point the tree's original stone was removed from the trunk and its plate was put on a new stone at tree's base.

Re: The Wall Painting
Back to the prop
My use of sharpen has brought out some interesting damage, if you look closely you will spot a scratch running left to right at an incline about midway down. The closer you look the more damage you will see. I'm beginning to wonder whether it's really a painting and not just a hand tinted photograph much like the postcards. This also begs the question what is it even doing in a motel of all places, I can understand it owned by someone that had been to Berkeley or still at the Uni. campus. As a painting why would it be in Gallup, even as a tourist photo souvenir why that big? Even so it's not impossible, just rather improbable considering the subject. Never mind just the way my mind works. Wait a minute, the tree is dedicated to a professor of Physics and his professor brother of Geology, a clue or just pure fluke luck?

Re: The Wall Painting
sadly, i think this may be just a 1 off painting, the props guys found in a thrift store somewhere. i don't think ANYBODY actually thought anything in that pic would ever be traced down, screwtenized, and debated as much as we are. we must give ourselves a pat on the back though. thats awesome detective work, fit for any CSI team, indeed.

Re: The Wall Painting
I just think it’s really ironic that on the 24th I made a joke about us going nuts until we could read the marker, and on the 25th we can actually read it.
I agree that the people who selected this prop probably had no idea what it was. Still, it would make for a great event theory. My mind is already racing.

Re: The Wall Painting
so you think the picture itself may have something to do with the event? And, that a significant painting of a monument to two very important brothers in the1800's in California, Hanging in a non-descript motel in New mexico may actually been a devious clue left by the twisted minds of the TLR team?
With all this talk, i wish we could ask some specific questions about it since we're all obsessed about it now.
It's been long enough since we got some scraps of info from the big guy, LOL

Re: The Wall Painting
If I had to bet, I would bet the painting is just a random painting the TLR team picked up.
On another topic, if it finally turns out that we can’t find the original image, it would be a relatively easy task to reproduce the image. There are lots of high resolution images of oaks:
http://scangeloaktree.com/13/Angel_Oak_Tree.jpg
Working together with Photoshop, we could stitch them together into a perfect copy:
Untooning Jessica Rabbit
There are plenty of services that turn images into paintings for a surprisingly low price:

This, of course, should be a last resort. I strongly suspect that we are looking for a print that can be found.

Re: The Wall Painting
That Angel Oak is an amazing tree.
Several of those old postcards are reproduced by various poster companies, our oak being one of them although from another view. Noticed that in passing, but didn't look too far into it. I trawled eBay for old postcards and that's where I found the last lot of the images I posted. I never ran a search for photographs, paintings, posters or prints. So if anyone wants to try that there's still something to do. My big question is why is this one tree so important that it had postcards, photos and paintings made of it? Why was it dedicated to those two brothers, what did they achieve or do? I think once we know why it may all make sense. Then again it could all just be a coincidental red herring. We need to ask Chris. Even if it's a negative, it's an amazing fluke that they picked the one painting that had such a strange connection.
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/334395/John-LeConte
I've noted this misspelling of his name before, haven't run any searched based on that for the tree, also have seen the tree described as the Centre Oak instead of the Le Conte Oak previously.

Meanwhile his brother:
