Re: The Wall Painting

I’m back (momentarily).

I just want to say that last night’s painting hunt was one of the most gratifying experiences of a long time.

Thanks a lot Mark! Great work Roller!

I kind of gathered that while looking for information on the name.

But look on the bright side. Thanks to TLR, Jess, The Collectors, and your personal determination, those trees are being remembered. By an unimaginably circuitous route, their beauty and majesty shine forth.

How true ! by this time the memory of those trees now rests with us ! I seriously doubt that anyone else has even thought of those trees in decades.

It's a proud & wonderful thing this thread has done !! Roller's work is beyond amazing ! to narrow this down to the LeConte Oak like you did was fantastic ! I walked around work today thinking of nothing but The Wall Painting, The LeConte Oak & the Berkeley Oak Grove.

Yes, that is the feeling I have too. It is like a Greek drama; or one of those stories about an investigative reporter who, while researching an article, unearths a tale of forgotten glory and tragedy.

This postcard, laid beside the painting, makes it much easier to do a point by point comparison:

Interesting note to add to this is, that the memorial stone missing from the Luna photo is actually sitting in the middle of the branches at the top of the main trunk. This trunk stone is different, flat faced rather than angled and missing the circular face plate. Also when there is a stone on the ground you can still see the one in the tree. So there's two memorial stones.

I used Bing (ex Live Maps) last night and had a look at Berkeley trying to see where the tree was, now this is either good news or bad, there's tons of trees there, not including those they destroyed. Problem is where was our tree, in with those removed or elsewhere?
