Shipping Packages to Soldiers
I have to ship a package to a deployed friend. Has anyone done this? I know you buy a flat rate box but I asked him what he wants and he said "whatever." lol Like I know what that means. I was wondering what any of you have shipped and what is good/bad. I did a little research but thought I'd ask some people. I know the no pork, no porn, no booze rules . Thanks!

Re: Shipping Packages to Soldiers
I’m stumped.
When I was a long way from home attending college, the school had a special program where they contacted people’s families and asked them to buy one of several “care packages” that would be delivered to us. My mother bought one of them for me, but they gave me the wrong package—a much cheaper one than she had paid for—so the whole thing just reminded me of how isolated I was and deepened my cynicism about the institution I was attending.
I’m sure I have been no help at all!

Re: Shipping Packages to Soldiers
See that's why I want to send something good. I want to do something to remind him of home and make him feel less isolated. I am probably agonizing over cookie choices for nothing. He'll probably just be happy to hear his name and see the package.

Re: Shipping Packages to Soldiers
Well My friend was in Iraq for a long time. and i ended up sending him some stuff and some other friends.
I would say Cookies would not be a good idea, (sorry Spike) they would be stale by the time they got there. it took sometimes 2 months for him to get mail. not to mention how long it took for him to send us something. If his deployment is almost over it would be faster for you to hand him something. Because (it has happened) the package will be shipped there and by the time it gets there he would be back and he would have to wait a while more to have it shipped back to him.
When my friend got back i asked him all of what he had and what he wish he had. He said they had plenty of naughty magazines while they where there that popped up out of no where(no one knew where they came from), and well they ended up reading all the articles in them because a lack of other reading material. So at least 1 good book would be a good thing to send. I would also say a accompanying letter would be a terrific thing to include to add some personal reading. My friend also said they got new movies there from Iraqi's that had bootleg versions. so new movies would not be a good thing either (sometimes) I would say that maybe a good older movie or something they might be interested in would be a good something as well.
Really when you are out in Iraq (or on deployment) boardom is common and entertainment is not always accessible even if they have the equipment to entertain them selfs.
But when he says he doesn't care he probably means it. The only thing on the mind of the people that are deployed is returning and you can't pack that in a box.
I hope i was helpful....

Re: Shipping Packages to Soldiers
I see G-man’s point. If you know what he likes to read, send a bunch of paperback books.
When you are really bored and isolated and entertainment is not available, a good book is a treasure.

Re: Shipping Packages to Soldiers
Thank you very much. That was most helpful. I will be sure to include some books and if I do send any food I will make sure it has shelf life (nothing homemade).
Thank you Thank you
