Why are you doing this?

Hello. I am Flockstrain from Spain.
Sorry if my english is not very good, but I will try to express as good as possible.
I am a great fan of "The Lost Room" and I have seen the series in original version, in Spanish, enclosedly the extras. I have liked so much that I have bought the key and the bus ticket by eBay, like a "souvenir" to remember the series.
Nevertheless, I do not understand what you do.
I have acceded to the forum and a worrying curiosity has arisen from why you devote yourself to collect objects and dedicate a lot of time to this labor.
I suppose that a thing is to be very a fan of something and other one to be really obsessive.
I would like an explanation.
Is it what it seems or is something more?
Thank you.

P.D. Convince me, and I will possibly give the bus ticket to anyone ;-)

Well, I can't speak for everyone but, personally, I think it is great fun.

One of the things I find most appealing about the show is the very fact that these powerful objects are essentially very ordinary.

Being that all the objects, for the most part, are from a bygone era makes it a little harder than just walking into a local supermarket and buying the latest "Pirates Of The Caribbean" toy. You have to work a bit. Scour eBay or local antique shops. (which is great fun in and of itself).

The fact that you liked the show enough to actually spend your money on The Key and The Bus Ticket shows that at least a little bit of that desire to be a part of something you really like exists in you.

Some of us just take it a bit further. emoticon

Personally, I consider myself to be quite a bit of a "Geek."

One thing that goes along with that is a tendency to collect things you like. Comic books, old board games, or replica props for your favorite movie/tv show.

Amazingly enough, I'm 34 years old and this is the FIRST thing I've ever felt strongly enough about to actually COLLECT.

Hope that helps.

As always,
Sincerely,

-Pizmeyre

Welcome Flockstrain !

Great to have you as member ! All of us here collect Objects for a hobby and it reflects our love of The Lost Room. A big part of collecting Objects is the hunt. That by far is the most fun !! sometimes you hunt for months before finding something.

Not to mention that we are technically hunting antiques so there is an underlying value to the Objects we find.

Hello Flockstrain and thank you for your question.

For myself, I really enjoyed the story and collecting the "Objects" helps me feel like I'm a part of that fantasy world. Real life (working, paying bills, etc.) can be boring and sometimes painful so I find it comforting to have something to escape to.

For the Lost Room, I also found that I was able to make some of the props like the Pen, Bus Ticket, Polaroid, Cigarettes, Matches and so on and then pass those Objects onto others who would really enjoy having them.

I also collect comic books and other SciFi props from movies and stories that interest me.

For me it is like a huge game with all the world as the playing board. I have done many things, but this is the most involving and rewarding by far. It is difficult to explain—sort of like climbing mountains—but the satisfaction is unmistakable.

I have learned a tremendous amount about the period reflected by the objects. I would never have known or cared about the odd looking scissors or the coatings on vintage playing cards if not for this process.

On the lighter side, I like the way the objects make my personal space look. When my niece was sitting on the recliner in my bedroom looking around, she commented, “Being in Uncle Scott’s room is like being in another world.”

Thank you very much for your answers!
Without these explanations, all seemed to be slightly rare, but now I understand that this game can be very entertaining.
I personally (already you know) have bought the key and the bus ticket by eBay, and I am trying to buy the pen.
I have liked very much the argument of paulv70, in which he makes clear that sometimes the real life is boring, and it suits to evade doing things as these.
Also an opinion that has turned out to be very interesting is that to realize this game supposes a process in what you can learn very much.
Thank you very much for being interested in my post. I will be charmed of taking part in this game of collecting objects.

Sincerely,
Flockstrain.

P.D. Sorry again for my bad English, I am Spanish and I can't practise it so much.

This is a strange phenomena you have going on here...

Fascinating.

I just saw the series for the first time, ended tonight. A great show.

So, you folks actually collect objects similar to those on the show?

similar or exact duplicates. it's is very tough to find certain Objects ! (The glasses, the flask, the watch) we all hunt and search the internet for what we can and post our finds in "the legion"

you will see that some of us take this to the extreme !

Some of us even make our own props like the Pen, Bus Ticket, Polaroid, Cigarettes, Matches, Wedding Photo, Postcard and Bar of Soap.
