A lesson about prescriptions meds

I'd like to thank everyone for all your kind messages during my recent health problems. It appears that we finally know what the problem was.

After 2 trips to my doctor and four trips to the ER (during one of which I was treated for a heart attack); one sonogram; a Cardiac Catheterization; a Cardiac Echo test; pelvic and chest CT scans; x-rays; blood work and a few other tests with no answers, I decided to do a little research and found the problem. It was a prescription my doctor put me on about two months ago. The "potential adverse effects" of which are shortness of breath and chest and abdominal pain. I called my doctor and she agreed that could definitely be the cause. I switched off that med and almost immediately the symptoms began to vanish. I'm waiting on the results of the last chest CT to verify there weren't any other problems and am hoping there won't be any long-term damage, but it looks like I'm out of the woods.

The lesson I'd like to share from all this is to always ask your doctor not only about side effects but potential adverse reactions to all medications. That and it never hurts to look them up yourself.

I presented the issue to my people and they arrived at the consensus that medicine is not what it used to be. I suppose you are right. You just have to be vigilant.

Maybe when really good expert systems and online record sharing are in place this kind of problem will be preventable.

Re: Update on Paul

Got some bad news. The chest CT showed that I have early stage Emphysema. That's why I reacted so badly to the prescription med which clearly states you don't give it to someone who already has lung disease. That was kind of a blessing in disguise though as it allowed us to diagnose the problem early so the prognosis is good.

I'm quitting the smoking and will be starting some form of treatment including an inhaler along with an exercise program once I have a pulmonary test to see exactly how much damage was done.

So here's the second lesson I'd like to share and I'm not preaching here. Don't smoke. Those things'll kill ya.

Even after what the doctors call a heart attack i still smoke. I don't know why. I should stop but I have a small stubborn streak. And besides, i look at it this way, you gotta die of something right? RIGHT?

Right.

I just don't want to die laying in an oxygen tent on a resperator unable to feed or clean myself when I'm 50.

Unless we decide to end it ourselves, we don't get to pick how we die. Sometimes we do get wake-up calls though as to what we could be facing down the road.

Just hang on. Maybe in the next five or ten years someone will come up with a cure.
