Radio Emblem Chuckle

I first noticed this when the Founder acquired his radio. At the time, it didn’t seem significant. I assumed that everyone else noticed it and felt the same way. You will observe that in this screen cap, the emblem on the radio is on the left. Yet, every Grundig 88 radio I am aware of has the emblem on the right.

It should be noted that moving the emblem to the other side would not be a trivial matter. I have both a Grundig 88U and a Grundig 88CA. I have studied both radios and determined that it would be quite difficult to move this emblem.

The shot was reversed. No other way around it.

It turns out that you are right. I managed to find one single frame that has just enough information to make this determination.

Image

In this image is the word GRUNDIG just below the buttons. In order for this to be GRUNDIG spelled forward, the letter under the red arrow would have to be an R. In order for this to be GRUNDIG spelled backward, the letter under the arrow would have to be an I. This letter is clearly an I rather than an R.

Once your eyes get used to looking at the image, you can actually see the word G R U N D I G clearly spelled out (backward).

God we’re getting good at this!

Incidentally, the scratch on the top left of the radio that shows through a darker color proves that the radio is a repainted maroon colored model. The prop guys probably repainted the whole thing to give it that bright “new” look.

Yes, that is the radio, but the knobs are a little off. Oddly, radios seem to come up quite a bit, so I wouldn’t be in any big hurry. We will connect you with a radio.

As for why the image got reversed, I think the standard response is, “In Hollywood we change everything.” We have found other things that were changed and otherwise mucked around for no apparent reason. The image of the comb in the Sood’s catalogue has been shortened so that it has too few teeth. The card box and the joker card are from two different brands of card deck, etc. In all fairness, these things are changed so that they look good on screen, but it seems that preservation of reality is a low priority in the cutting room.

As I think someone mentioned in another thread, the reason probably has more to do with avoiding trademark or copyright issues. As far as I can recall, there are no visible brand names used in the series. The cigarettes kind of look like Lucky Strikes, but obviously are not.

You are very possibly right, but that brings up this sticky issue. This label clearly says Dr Scholl’s. Also, the trademark is clearly that of Dr Scholl’s. So how did they justify it?

Image

I strongly suspect, though I haven’t investigated it thoroughly, that the square tin container and the blue elliptical icon are anachronistic. Also, Scholl is a common name. Another thing: it could possibly be the name Scholls in its regular form rather than Scholl in its possessive form. The apostrophe is not quite discernable. I checked several phone directories and both names are common. Is it possible to skirt trademark issues with such trivial modifications?

This is obviously important to collecting, because we may be looking for a tin of Dr Scholl’s that does not exist. It may be that the only way to acquire it is to modify an existing tin in the manner of Founder Bunny.

NOTE: I CONTINUED THIS DISCUSSION IN THE SEPARATE BRAND NAMES VS ROYALTIES CHUCKLE
