posticon Pencil?

Is there anything special about the pencil? When I got the quarter, I decided to get a 1959 because that is when I was born. I have thought many times of sharpening a No. 2 pencil and calling it an object, but maybe I am missing something.

Re: Pencil?

This is what I read from the decription of Objects from the wiki page:
<<Pencil Standard # 2 Pencil - Creates a 1961 US penny when the eraser tip is tapped against a solid surface. >>

Nothing of great significance about the pencil that I can observe. I was planning the same thing.

As for the Quarter
<<Quarter 1961 U.S. Quarter, When swallowed, temporarily brings the holder's desired memories of a person to life and gives them solid form, lasting a few days. The user can shut it off at will and the effect presumably ends automatically when the coin is passed by bowel movement. People created from the memories seem to display little or no independent personality, and at best act as the bearer remembers they would have acted. Although the remembered/created people appear fully clothed, the quarter is not shown creating inanimate objects alone, without someone wearing them.>>

I decided to get an uncirulated quarter since it will be in the best condition. I think The Event occurred in April so Im guessing most coins would still be in fairly new condition at that time.

I'm not sure I buy into the 1961 quarter description--unless we are granting Wikipedia canonicity. The government doesn't typically distribute new coins until well into the year and that quarter in the miniseries looked pretty used to me. I think I'll stick with my 1959 until someone offers a compelling argument.

All I did was get a standard #2 pencil...an new one...sharpened the end...used it to wear the tip a little....then I rubbed the lead with my fingertips and rubbed them on the bare wood surrounding the lead....it darkened the wood enough to look older and dirtier...then at various places i scratched the paint some to "antique" it. TADA ! The Pencil is now done ! emoticon I also have a 1961 Penny that I keep with the Objects just to "keep it real" emoticon

Same here. Standard #2 pencil, slightly sharpened.

I like having the 1961 quarter just as a detail like having the clock set at 1:20 with the alarm hand at 9:00. Though it could easily have been any year prior to 1961.

Re: Pencil?

I love that video !! Obviously the guy with the pencil is unstable...if I had the pencil I would hook it up to a machine that would tap it for me. then all I would have to do is bag the pennies whenever I could.

supposedly the pencil can crank out $500 a day in pennies (5000 pennies a day)

I wonder what would happen if you took 1000's of 1961 pennies to the bank on a weekly basis...would they think you are making them ?? I bet they would sooner or later notify the FBI !! you would have to take them to different banks all the time.

I agree take them to different banks; but, my question is how would the bank know of the 1961 anomoly since the pennies are rolled and bundled?

Or are they loosely bagged for deposit?

Wow! Thanks ttevola. That was great. No, I hadn’t seen it before.

I have wondered the same thing about cashing in the pennies. Sooner rather than later any bank would have questions. I suppose you could take them to CoinStar for a while, but even they would eventually have questions.

Here is an angle. If the pennies are not also objects, you could melt them down and sell the copper. By mounting the indestructible pencil on some sort of high-speed tapping machine with a slide that goes into a bin, you could make a lot of copper. If the pennies are objects, you could use them to make some sort of indestructible armor—like chain mail.

But this adds credence to an earlier claim of mine: the objects have a dumbing down effect. Otherwise, why would the objects owners make such unimaginative use?

It's quite hard, as a writer, to foresee the entire scope of such a power's effects. I think it's just the lack of depth to the thought process. That or the specificity of The Pencil's ability; perhaps it can only work if tapped by a Human hand, and who could ever say? The series certainly doesn't elaborate.
