After a carefull scrutiny I came up with this approximate map. I combined these three pictures above of the Collectors to came up with this arrangement of items.
Which is, obviously, my interpretation of the table.

WOW
amazing work

Now for the part of story that gets a little bit sad

In the top collector's image note the edge of
the table just under the elbow of the man in
the blue jacket. There in a dark vertical line
and next to it a bright reflection. That pat of
the table in round. It is the corner of one of
two [sign in to see URL] have two square tables pushed
together. Further it seems that the they are
held up by a central column. It is common
in restaurant tables which seat four people.
sorry, I saw this last week but forgot to tell
you. My bad.

Nah, that's irrelevant. Although you are correct about the seam.

My aim was not to re-create the setting. It is just a computer-generated approximate, a cartoon map, nothing else.

I could have gone into tiny-detail actual sizes and shapes, but that would not have given anything more to this drawing, it could have made this more confusing to look at.

That is why I left out some details and made the items more basic in shape.

Realism was not the goal here emoticon

P.S. Added the seam to the pictures

You are amazing.
The tables are great.
The reason I'm concerned about the tables is how they got 13 people around the tables. Where the place settling started and where they ended up. It's just the angle I'm look at. It would be major maddening to do up every little detail. I think Mr Conroy Jr is the one taking the photos. I think Mr Conroy Sr is the man in the overalls. I know which woman is Mrs Conroy. Guessing John Card is the guy with the string tie. No idea which woman is Stritzke. It would be nice to know the collectors names.

There is actually a scene in these pictures, where there is more plates and coffeecups on the table.

This all looks really make-shift and cumbersome. I do not think this meeting in the diner was planned, nor was it a true pre-xmas party. I think the events in the diner happened some time after christmas, but before new year. And they just went in without reservation.

If this was a true well-before-planned gathering, a xmas party, they would have had

a) more tables and chairs
b) a tablecloth
c) they would have had festive clothing on
d) they would have had matching bowls and dinnerware

granted it is a 'cheap diner', but they knew how to make things look posh in the sixties. I am sure they would have had at least a tablecloth.

So this is not a xmas party, this is Objects party

Re: New Photos of the Collectors

Interesting tidbit:

quote:

By 1964 a movement arose and the union United Farm Workers Association (UFWA) was formed with 1,000 members. The farm workers wanted better wages and better working and living conditions. In August 1965, an independent walkout of Mexican and Filipino grape workers in Delano, California caught the leader and organizer of the UFW, Cesar Chavez's attention. An even larger strike led by the Filipinos against all the grape companies in the Delano area was supported by UFWA. When the strike was not successful in completely halting field work, Chavez organized a march to California's state capitol to inspire farm workers to join the Union. The march was effective in getting national attention, however, Chavez knew that neither the march nor the strike would be effective in getting the grape producers to negotiate. UFWA then decided to call a boycott of the Schenley Liquor Company who owned the vast majority of the vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley.

This was a success and soon other grape producers were forced to sign contracts. Chavez sent representatives throughout the country to coordinate boycott meetings and fundraising efforts. For the next four years the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee decided to boycott all table grapes; this received wide public support. This boycott was the most successful in American history.

So, for the Collectors to have grapes on their table, these events would have to have happened after 1961 but before 1965. The boycott lasted until 1970.

Although, it is possible -being in New Mexico, that the owner of the Diner knew a grape farmer and got the grapes from him/her. Or that the grapes on the table are 'union-approved' ones. *shrughs*

quote:

Injury to grapevines during the winter may be a problem in all areas of New Mexico. Hardening the vines is very important in reducing injury. Lengthen the interval between irrigations in late summer and fall. This reduces vegetative growth and allows the wood to mature. If vines are overly vigorous, reduce the rate of nitrogen fertilizers.

quote:

he harvest season typically falls between August & October in the Northern Hemisphere and February & April in the Southern Hemisphere. With various climate conditions, grape varieties, and wine styles the harvesting of grapes could happen in every month of the calendar year somewhere in the world. In the New World it is often referred to as the crush.[1]

Because of the climate in New Mexico, grapes are harvested on October, the latest. This makes me think the grapes are imported from Mexico, where grapes can be harvested on early December the latest.

This puts the timeframe of the party to take place approximately a week before Christmas. The grapes being the harvest of the very last circle on first week of December, and being fresh enough to be eaten no later than the next week.
