You know I will do anything but kill or die to win it…and that is only because I can’t take the objects with me to prison or the next life.

Foolish infidel!

Just like watching three roaches fighting over a bread crumb while the exterminator is charging up his industrial spray gun. They have no idea how hideously and colossally they were snuffed.

On the other hand, I can’t believe how much I bid for this thing. We are getting to be worse than the actual Order of the Reunification. After I have it safely in my hands, I will tell the whole story of how I acquired it.

I did get off cheap. I credit that to the complacency of the infidel.

Re: Flask Found

My flask came:

Image

I can’t wait to get out and start suffocating people!

But before I do that, I have to explain my experience looking for it.

Most of us never considered the flask to be findable. We just assumed that it was such a rare antique that for all practical purposes it was lost to antiquity. Possibly there was one lying around in someone’s closet somewhere, but we would never see it.

Then the impossible happened. Sincox reported that he had found the flask. He posted his find on August 8, 2007, almost nine months ago. This was a surprise to all of us. We doubted that any other flasks would be found and suggested that he make prints of the engraving on his flask so that the rest of us could make copies. At that time, I created several searches on eBay for the flask, and waited patiently for one to turn up.

About two months later, on October 10, Paul found a second flask. This was the first indication that the flask might be something like a regular commodity that the rest of us could hope to acquire. At this time, I decided to quit waiting patiently on emails for my saved searches and began checking them by hand whenever I got to a computer. I turned off the email notification function because the notices always came after I had already checked each of my searches. They were nothing but old news.

Three months later, on January 3, 2008, Chuckles found the third flask. When he reported it, I realized that the search criteria I was using had failed to turn it up and I would never have seen the flask until it had been claimed by someone else.

It was then that I made my resolution. I decided that every time I got to a computer, which was four or five times each day, I would search for the flask using the one word criterion “flask”. When you get on eBay and type in “flask” under “all categories”, about 3500 items come up. I had to look at 500 listings each and every day, or about 100 listings every time I got to a computer. I did this almost without fail for four months.

Finally, I found the flask.

When I found it, I wasn’t absolutely sure it was the right one. I had seen so many hunting scene flasks during my search that the images had gotten muddled in my brain. However, I didn’t want to take a chance on someone else claiming it first, so I went ahead and placed a marker bid. I decided that I could live with buying the wrong one for a small amount of money easier than I could live with loosing the only one I had ever found. I must insist at this time that I have absolute respect for our first-bidder rule. If someone else had claimed it, I would have deferred to them without quibble. I might have suffered a terminal stroke, but I would have deferred.

As most of you know, I place nearly all of my bids with AuctionStealer. I went to my AuctionStealer account and entered an amount that I was sure would win the flask. After a while of reconsidering, I decided to enter a larger amount. Ultimately, I had a rather disquieting revelation. I realized that I would rather loose the flask for nonpayment than because I had bid too low. At least if I lost it for nonpayment, I would be in control of the process. If I lost it because I bid too low, I would always doubt my judgment. At that moment, I made the unprecedented decision to bid so much for the flask that no sane person anywhere in the world could possibly compete with me—no one!

Originally I set the snipe order on AuctionStealer to bid in the last three seconds. However, I began to worry that something might go wrong if I cut it that close, so I reset it to 5 seconds. I decided I would rather take a chance of someone slipping in a bid and it costing a bit more than loosing it altogether.

At the time that the auction was nearing its end, I was teaching one of my computer based math classes. This made it possible for me to watch the auction down to the last five minutes. In the last five minutes a student came up to me with several questions, which I had to answer. The auction ran out while I was helping the student.

When I refreshed the page, I discovered that I had won the flask for $36—mere pennies compared to what I was realistically prepared to pay. I had to leave and go to the other room—ostensibly to use the toilet, but actually because I couldn’t contain the excitement.

I can’t begin to explain how elated I am to finally have the flask. It is silver like Chuckle’s flask and in excellent condition. Now that I have seen it up close, I strongly suspect that the engravings could be copied so that everyone can have one.

For all of the reasons detailed above, I have decided to accept the title that has already been offered to me of RMC. If anyone else hopes to attain to that title, you will understand what it means. I didn’t want to accept it until I could definitely make my case.

I hope all the rest of you eventually find yours. I know that I will cherish mine for the rest of my life, if only for the sweat and labor I put into acquiring it. Money can buy “a” flask, but money cannot buy “the” flask. It has to be taken on the fly.

OK…now off to suffocate people. I saw some people just the other day that could use some suffocating. Heck, several of my own students could stand to loose a breath or two…

Re: Flask Found

When I read your post Spike I could actually feel the unbridled joy and excitement you are feeling...I have been there...it's almost like being a kid again and getting a chance to meet the REAL Santa.....total maxed out elation.

I too bid a crazy amount to ensure winning my flask. I am not ashamed to say that I bid $500 to get my sweet Flask ! though I won it for $81 there was NO way I was going to lose it no matter what so I can only imagine what your max bid was.....probally close to mine if not more.

While I still think that The TV is my most prized Object due to the hunt for it, the trip to get it and it's amazing condition, The Flask is by far my most loved Object to date. I still hold it everyday and I have actually drank some mighty fine 20yr old scotch from it a while back. Something about it facinates me to no end, the embossing, the sound of it when I touch it, the feel, etc.....and of all my Objects it is the one all my freinds would love to own in it's own right.

I agree that it is one tough Object to find, it's age & markings have only added to the difficulty of finding one and if you also throw in that many now are long gone never to be seen again then you could equate The Flask with finding The Holy Grail itself.

Giddy as hell are'nt you ?? my guess it that your holding it as you read this marveling in it's antiquity and style, facinated by it's simple functionality and in awe of it's grandeur. Enjoy it my freind...Objects like The Flask are why we do this.

Welcome RMC Spikosauropod ! it is an awarded title and you have definately earned it big time !
