3D software?

Am I crazy or is 3D software ABSURD ?!?!?

If I wanted to create a simple 3D block with raised text of my choice, it SHOULD take 10 seconds.

I played with the software for 20 minutes and still couldn't do it. These people are clearly from Mars. Earthlings haven't got a chance of deciphering this nonsense.

yes, you are crazy. about the 3D software aspect I'm not sure. what software package are you referring to and what were you trying to make 3D?

Or I wouldn't be on THIS site, right ? emoticon

I read some reviews, picked a reasonably priced one for the features the review said it had and played with it. It does NOT behave like a 3D version of Photoshop like I'd hoped.

Tom is putting together a 3D Printer. It can print a 3D object out of plastic. I was simply going to make a 3D image of a Niessen 612A key and print it. Then make metal keys out of the plastic key.

I would need to make some text raised and some text indented. The text tool on the software doesn't even seem to have depth control. Clearly I'm missing something or you have to buy real autocad.

hmm...I think I'm a little naive. It appears there is a difference between 3D and solid modeling. Need more research.

It's difficult to learn but after you have learned it, doing something like that doesn't take very long at all.

It's even harder to learn if the software doesn't even possess the feature you're trying to learn !!!!!

The software didn't even do 3D text. No wonder I couldn't figure out how to do it. emoticon

Re: 3D software?

Just returned home. My partner in crime, Jim, has got most of the 3d printer assembled. It came with software, but I haven't looked at it as of yet. It is my understanding that the printer likes Adobe Illustrator file, thus svg, postscript, land. It seems the printer itself deals with depth issues, but as said I have not got to the actual laying down of sub-straight.

Jin will let you know about how well the bundled software works with the printer. Hope you did not lay down major coin for software. I too am looking forward to making the key in plastic and the knobs for the Motorola. And wouldn't it be a hoot to do Joe's gun.

Not really, after the first failure, I ordered a second software and made sure it did solid modeling and I got it for $39.99 off eBay. (retails for $100)

Sometimes the benefit is in the journey. I learned how to cast in acrylic when I made Joe's badge. That was a cool skill for the future.

The new 3D software I ordered exports many formats.
Does your printer do STL ? This is favored by some of the RepRap 3D printer series.

What program are you using? It seems odd that it wouldn't have the 3D text feature.

My first program was DesignCad 3D. The text tool was totally useless. It was on the level of "notepad" the free writing program that comes with windows. You could control font and size and that was it. Maybe you're supposed to use some other tool on the 2D text to make it 3D after the fact, but if it was there, I didn't see it.

My next program is called ViaCad. And it says on the box that it has lots of tools for 3D modeling and exports like a dozen different formats. Haven't played with it yet.

Generally (from what I have experienced) the text is 2D when put and you use the depth tool to expand it.
